In this section, we want to answer the questions you have about FORTIFEIO. You just need to send us an e-mail...
01. What’s the meaning of “fortifeio”? I can't find the word in my dictionary.
The word “fortifeio” is an innovative written form of a very popular Portuguese expression - “forte e feio!”. This expression literally translated to English is “strong and ugly”, though its meaning in Portuguese would be something like “pushing the envelope”.
In a country that keeps believing that architects should only by engaged in aesthetic related issues, we want to state contradiction, rebellion and positive irony immediately.
02. …ok, but shouldn’t architects be concerned with aesthetics?
Yes and no. Aesthetics or beauty (whatever that might be) is important, but it is not our main concern. Meaning that in our method, we consider much more variables than the eminent Vitruvius triad “Firmitas, Utilitas and Venustas”. Architecture is no more than finding solutions for diverse problems. Our statement is that we’ll push the envelope to solve those problems. The result can be lovely or ugly, frail or strong, depending on the primary goal.
Ask a cyclist if he is worried about his pedaling. He’ll probably say that if he doesn’t pedal, he won’t move at all. But when he is riding, he won’t even think about it…
03. Architecture and derivatives? Are you producing cheese and yoghurts?
Not yet, but we might consider it. It is a fact that in the Portuguese context, the word “derivados” is common in industrial activities related to milk, meat, wood, etc. In the architectural, artistic and creative context it is not very common. We find the word adequate to our working process that, although having nothing of industrial, aims to be wider, but at the same time converging with “plain” architecture.
04. What is your specialization?
We have works and projects made on diverse scales. From rings to squares. Small and big houses. Interior and exterior lamps, furniture for many functions. Interior refurbishing of offices, clinics or small bedrooms. We have lost and we have been awarded in public contests for urban interventions or for public buildings. Our specialization is not based on form or function or even program. We are specialized in answering each client as if it is the only one, and achieving results that are both exclusive and valued.
We add value to the objectives defined together with our clients.
05. Why don’t you show more projects on-line?
For three main reasons. First of all, that demands compilation time after the conclusion of the work. And that is not always viable. Second, as architects, we believe that half a dozen of photos, few plans and sections presented on a 800x600 computer screen, is not exactly the same as visiting the site itself. Finally and subsequently, with this web site we want to transmit our way of thinking and acting, so that someone who identifies with us may consider to choose us as professional partners.
06. Is it possible to have one of the images that illustrate this site printed in big size.
Yes. It is very simple (though not automatic):
1. select the URL that appears when you’re looking at the image;
2. copy-paste it to a e-mail to send us;
3. write your contacts and also the dimensions and quantities you wish for.
We’ll contact you regarding delivery and payment methods.
07. Internship at fortifeio?
If you need to start your practice to be admitted in the Portuguese Architects Association. If you’re young and full of positive energy, if you still believe you can change the world. If you really want to wear our team shirt, then send CV and small selection of the works you’re most proud of to our e-mail.
If the files total exceeds 2MB, you won’t probably get lucky. Synthetic thinking is a virtue even in the digital era! Don’t mail us millionaire portfolios printed in ultra-coated-glossy paper.
